How to Navigate Business Beyond the Grind
At Beyond The Grind, we know that success isn't just about hard work; it’s about strategic navigation and building the right team to guide you. In this episode, we discuss the essential professionals every business person needs, not just for life, but specifically for their business. This is about building your strategic dream team - the professionals who help you make decisions, manage risk, and future-proof your business.
We start out with a list of key people for life like a doctor, but when you are a business owner or an aspiring entrepreneur, you need to think about a different kind of team. We see this as your "Mount Rushmore" of business advisors.
First, you need a business advisor. No matter how skilled you are, there will always be unfamiliar territory. A business advisor helps you navigate those complexities and make informed decisions, especially when you are looking at different deals.
Next, a technical professional or advisor is crucial in today's digital landscape. If you have a business in 2025 and no online presence, you are killing yourself. This person helps you position yourself so your clientele can find you.
And of course, a good CPA is non-negotiable. Once you're making money, you need to know how to keep it and grow it. While accounting is about the past, a CPA with an advisory can help you strategize for the future, looking at what you’ve done and what you need to do better. We think of this as a financial strategist, someone who helps you assess potential deals and figure out what your business actually needs. A financial advisor, on the other hand, is a very broad term for someone who takes your money and invests it in the stock market. While that is one path, we believe a strategist is more critical for the entrepreneur because they help you look at all the angles to see if an opportunity is right for you, regardless of how emotionally tied you are to it.
Now for the less obvious but equally important professionals.
An attorney is number one, especially if you have a partnership. You can't do any handshake deals with partners, even if they're your best friend. People change, especially when money comes. An attorney helps you start off properly and navigate any conflicts that arise.
Another critical professional is a banker. You need to build a relationship with a banker because they can help you with lines of credit, business loans, and other financial needs to scale your business. If you have a good relationship, they will fight on your behalf with underwriters. As I like to say, ask for money when you don't need it.
And finally, we believe you need a dentist. This might sound silly, but your appearance is a huge part of your professional brand, and your smile is often the first thing people see. People judge those with visibly unhealthy teeth or gums in the same way they do with disheveled or bad hygiene. A healthy, confident smile can be the difference between closing a big deal and not. It's a real thing, and it can be the reason you're not getting to the next level.
Ultimately, whether for your personal life or your business, you have to invest in the right relationships. Relationships matter, and having a strategic dream team will help you grow personally and professionally.
