On this show "Beyond The Grind", we often talk about the nuts and bolts of building a business; marketing plans, financial statements, and operational workflows. These are the tangible actions, the daily grind. But we’ve learned that true, sustainable success requires something more profound running in parallel: Holistic Growth. This isn't just a buzzword for us; it's a core principle. It's the conscious cultivation of a life where your business serves your personal vision, not the other way around. It’s about understanding that while the hustle is necessary, the ultimate goal is not just a healthy balance sheet, but a healthy, fulfilled life.
The first step in holistic growth is to challenge the conventional definition of success. Society often equates success with money, a big house, or a luxury car. This external validation fuels the "rat race": a never-ending, reactive cycle of keeping up with the Joneses. You see someone with a new Tesla or a G-Wagon, and suddenly you feel pressure to upgrade, even if your 10-year-old car runs perfectly fine. This is an externally driven pursuit, and it can be exhausting because it’s never satisfied.
On our journey, we’ve come to see this chase as a distraction. True success, for us, is defined by intangibles: peace, time, and relationships. It’s about achieving the freedom to control your own life and destiny, to not be beholden only to money. A lot of people have the money and the cars but can't take a vacation or are an employee in their own business, constantly working for it instead of it working for them. The real question we must ask ourselves is, on our deathbed, what will we remember? It won’t be the balance sheet; it will be the relationships we built and the people we impacted.
Of course, this perspective can evolve. For someone in survival mode, living paycheck to paycheck, success is understandably financial. The first milestone is building a three to six month cushion and breaking that cycle. But the ultimate goal shouldn't be just accumulation. It should be using that financial stability to build a life of freedom, purpose, and meaningful connections.
A cornerstone of holistic growth is finding balance between entrepreneurship and family, but not in the way most people think. We’ve learned that balance is not about equal hours; it’s not 50/50. It’s about being 100% present wherever you are. When you’re at work, you go hard so you feel like you’ve left it all out there. And when you walk in the door at home, the phone goes away, and you give your family your full attention. You’re there, but are you really there? Your kids and your spouse can tell the difference.
To achieve this, intentionality is everything. We are huge proponents of using a calendar not just for a to-do list, but for what is truly valuable to you. If family dinner, a workout, or a date night is a priority, it needs to be blocked off on the calendar just like a business meeting. This gives you control over your time, rather than letting others dictate it for you. I even had to start blocking off "lunch" on my calendar just so I could have the option to eat, because people would see an open slot and fill it without a second thought.
This system extends to the family unit. We use a shared family calendar so everyone has visibility on the day's schedule. My wife and I are "equally yoked," meaning we complement each other’s strengths and share the same core values. This alignment is the foundation. She knows how to pull me in to help with tasks that utilize my strengths, and I know her priorities, creating a seamless process that reduces stress and allows us to be fully present in both our professional and personal lives.
We've discussed stocks, real estate, and crypto, but we firmly believe that the best investment you can ever make is in yourself. Why? Because markets can be shaky, but the knowledge and skills you acquire stay with you forever. You are the constant, reliable asset that allows you to take advantage of opportunities when they arise.
This investment takes many forms. Reading is fundamental. We’ve found that when we are consistently consuming structured content (actual books, not just social media clips) our success, revenue, and even our sense of peace improves. When you invest in books for your team, you create a shared wavelength and empower them with your vision.
Mentorship is another non-negotiable. You cannot underestimate its power. Whether it’s finding a mentor who has been where you want to go or taking the step to mentor someone else, it’s about participating in an ecosystem of knowledge sharing. We’ve learned that you don't have to be a master of everything to be a mentor; you just need to have experience in one specific area that someone else doesn't. Even your failures are a form of knowledge that can help someone else avoid the same pitfalls.
These investments have both tangible and intangible returns. A certification might directly lead to a higher salary, but the intangible ROI (like increased confidence, better decision-making skills, and a shifted mindset) is often even more valuable.
Ultimately, holistic growth is a mindset. It’s the understanding that you are the creator of your business, not the other way around; when the business fails, you are not a failure as a person. It requires grit and a willingness to take risks, but it also requires grace. A huge part of this is allowing yourself the space to fail quietly, to work "in the dark" while you're developing an idea without the pressure of public opinion. You develop the product, the transformation, in a protected space so it’s ready when it hits the light.
This ties directly into our belief that progress builds business, but perfection builds pressure. Chasing perfection leads to analysis paralysis and fear of failure. Instead, we advocate for launching a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), getting real-world feedback, and iterating. The goal isn't a flawless launch; it's consistent motion. You have to be okay with failing, because the longer you spend trying to prevent something from failing, the longer you delay the success that might be waiting for you.
This is the "Beyond" in "Beyond The Grind." It is the intentional, continuous work of defining our own success, being fully present, investing in our growth, and building the resilience to navigate the unseen grind that lies beneath every successful venture.
