I keep seeing people get rich quick from new trends, but I always miss out. How do I know what's real and what's just hype?
We get it. There's always a "next best thing". But if you don't really understand it, how can you take advantage of it before it fizzles out? The principle we follow is to focus on value, not hype. Invest in what you use and what you believe in. If you're an avid Netflix user, you understand its value in your life. If you believe in something, when it dips, you're more likely to buy more instead of "paper handing" it and pulling out at a loss.
I feel like I'm working hard but not getting rich. Why does it seem to happen overnight for everyone else?
That's the "instant gratification" mindset our generation has been fed. We see these "unicorns" startups that blow up and make people rich in their garage. But we've forgotten that true wealth is built over time. You can't hit a home run every time; you have to get on base. The effort you put in today, compounded over a period of time, is what ultimately gets you to a place of wealth. There's a reason most people in the U.S. don't hit millionaire status until their late 40s or early 50s, they spent time building.
I'm making good money, but I feel guilty spending it on luxury things. Should I be a minimalist like Warren Buffett?
That's a great question. We debated this because, as Nigerians, being humble isn't in our nature. How are people going to know you're getting money? But it's not about being a minimalist; it's about spending for value. I bought my first pair of Gucci dress shoes when I was getting married. That was 10 years ago, and I still have them today. They're perfect. I bought a Tesla in 2017 and still have it. When you spend, spend for value that lasts, not just for the hype or to stunt (unless that's your marketing move).
